I’m Sahil Dhir, your head chair for the UNCTAD committee at Cerritos High School’s Novice MUN conference. From freshman to senior year, MUN has been a part of my high school journey from the very beginning. Despite the loss of sleep, stress, and occasional embarrassment that have come with it, I can confidently say that it is the class in which I have grown the most. From research to public speaking, MUN teaches you skills that are hard to find anywhere else. MUN has not only expanded my worldview but also strengthened my belief in myself, giving me the skills and confidence to achieve things I never knew I could do. With that said, I remember preparing for my first conference, trying to find solutions for problems that even the best minds in the world couldn’t solve, and thinking, What am I going to do? Though MUN may feel pointless at times, it is in this seeming pointlessness and confusion that it holds value. MUN is an exercise in being uncomfortable: pushing yourself to do more. As such, I encourage those in my committee to push their limits and embrace discomfort. If you consider yourself a quiet person, speak out. If you see yourself as loud, try to listen. For those who hate improvising, try to veer a little off script; and for those who love improv, try writing points down. It is through this experimentation that we expand our skill set, giving us the tools to reach greater heights. |
